Out of the zoo... into a sanctuary!

For most of the year, Bamboo, Chai, and Watoto live 16 to 17 hours a day in a small, barren barn room. When they finally get outdoors they only have a fraction of an acre. The Elephant Sanctuary in Hohenwald, Tennessee already agreed to take the elephants in for free, so they can enjoy 2.700 acres of hills, fields, forests, and a 25 acre lake.

To keep the planet’s largest land mammal in this way is horribly cruel and inhumane, since they need to walk 10 - 30 miles a day for their physical and mental health. It’s no wonder captive zoo elephants live decades shorter than their natural lifespan. And it’s no wonder they all display repetitive stereotypic behaviors and some have arthritis, colic and chronic foot infections - all evidence of captivity - induced stress and suffering.

Example tweet: Please save the Woodland Park Zoo elephants and relocate them to a sanctuary.

Example Facebook message: Please relocate all elephants from Woodland Zoo Park to The Elephant Sanctuary in Tennessee where they can enjoy 2.700 acres of hills, fields, forests and a 25 acre lake.

Example letter:

Dear representative of the City of Seattle,

I was shocked to find out on 3dayz.com about the horrific housing conditions of the elephants inside Woodland Park Zoo.

They have an inhumane amount of space (less than 1 acre), whereas they would have between 300 and 2.200 acres at The Elephant Sanctuary. They are also locked up in a small barn stall 16 to 17 hours a day for about 7 months of the year due to temperatures and wetness. It's no wonder the elephants show signs of stress and repetitive stereotypical behavior like pacing and swivelilng their heads.

I would like to ask you to please relocate all elephants from Woodland Zoo Park (including Sri, who's currently on loan at the St. Louis Zoo) to The Elephant Sanctuary in Hohenwald, Tennessee as soon as possible where they can enjoy 2.700 acres of hills, fields, forests and a 25 acre lake.

Sincerely,
[YOUR NAME]
